Linda, you make a good point here. I have students with very little language and have very heavy reliance on visuals. How would I keep them safe and away from windows. My suggestion is to have a stash of activities for them to do in emergencies to keep them busy and distracted from the windows. It is a challenge, you handled it well with prepping them and giving a full explanation.
I get what you are saying. We as teachers have to take the time to discuss what can possibly happen on a school campus. This includes information that the students may or may not hear and they need to know how to react. Teaching the students to stay calm, cool, and collected is important. Following the class and what any staff member says is also key.
