*EDIT* September 21, 2008
I am very sad to report that Caleb is not doing well. Despite passing a temperament test before beginning heartworm treatment, he has begun to show serious signs of aggression. We are currently seeing a behaviorist and I sincerely hope this helps him. Thank you to everyone for all the support thus far. Please keep praying for Caleb!

*EDIT* July 9, 2008
Caleb has returned home after spending three days with the vet. He is going back for follow up treatment in a month, but all the adult worms in his heart have been killed. He wasn't a very good boy at the vet- he bit the attendant and the vet, so he needs a lot of work, both with health and temperament.

I am hoping Caleb will be ready to go to his new home in September. If you think you may be interested in adopting Caleb, please email me at doganddisc@comcast.net and I will send you an adoption application.

*EDIT* July 6, 2008

With an absolutely enormous thanks to the people who generously donated money and passed this video around, I am pleased to tell you all that Caleb will be starting treatment tomorrow, July 7. I cannot thank you enough for the help you have given me. An extra special thanks to Ashley Partyka (and her sister!) and Zak George for spreading the word about Caleb's situation. I will give more updates as they come.
--------------------------

Caleb had a rough start to life. His history is unknown until he was picked up by Spaulding County Animal Control in Griffin, GA. He was placed in Spaulding County Animal Shelter with only a week to live. With the threat of the gas chambers hanging over his head, a private rescuer who is very far away from Georgia opted to save his life.

Through the generous support of three extraordinary people, Caleb was transported from Griffin, GA to Hartford, CT. He arrived completely terrified, covered in ticks (over fifty ticks were pulled off of him in the first two days that he was with the rescue), a whole twenty pounds underweight, and a horrible cough. Caleb was in rough shape, but from the second that he met his rescuer at the airport, he showed nothing but love, a wagging stubby tail, and gave plenty of kisses.

It was soon discovered that Caleb's cough was due to a nasty case of heartworm, most likely in an advanced stage because he was being infected over and over again. He has worms living in his heart and lungs. His vet bills will exceed $1000 by the time treatment has been completed.

This sweet boy was picked as one of hundreds of thousands to get a second chance at life. Please help his future remain a positive one.

Caleb is either an Aussie or a Pyr Shep mix. There are strong opinions supporting both sides, but regardless of breed, he is one lovable boy!

  • how is he doing now? i havent watched this video in so long and was wondering if he found a home yet, and how is his agression problem?

  • Caleb was euthanized in October. His aggression took a turn for the absolute worse when he went for the one person I thought he would never attack: me.

I miss this guy, but I do believe he is a much better place now. Sadly, his time here did not show him the better parts of humanity. Caleb is not and will never be forgotten though.

  • i have debit card with my paypal and i just tried that but apparently that isn't accepted, if i got a prepaid credit card would that work? I could sign up with one tomorrow morning, please post here whether that will work or not, thanks!

  • I'm not sure why a paypal debit card wouldn't work, but then, I don't know too much about those.

If you can't get it to work and still want to donate, you can donate directly to the vet by calling them at 860-688-4969. The paypal debit card should work for them.

Thank you so much for your generosity!

  • I don't mean to play devils advocate here folks, but Caleb is an Australian Shepherd, not a Pyr Shepherd. They don't look anything alike, google the breed and see.

HWs effects 2 out of 10 dogs here in GA. I hope his treatment comes through, because we had planned to pull him here in GA, but weren't allowed to because another rescue had already spoken for him. We would have had him treated for about $375. Hope this rescue realizes Aussies are sensitive to Ivermectin and don't use that.

  • I will take every percaution in case he does have a bit of Australian Shepherd in him, but still maintain that he is either 100% Berger or a mix of Berger and another breed(s).

I hope you find a sweet Aussie to take the place that would have been Caleb's. Spaulding had another Aussie come in right after Caleb was transported to me (with the BC mix, Mimi). And that dog really was an Aussie.

    Keep up the good work!
