Is there anything funnier than a Fat Man in a Little Car? How about TWO? On September 20th 1988 I was honored to be driven all around the Denver/Boulder Metro area in Bob Johnsen's new toy, his 1979 Fiat convertable.

The Late Robert C. Johnsen sr. (aka the "Captain of Pleasure") was an old friend of my family and I got to know him quite well in the last decade of his life.
At 6 foot 3, and often tipping the scale at 450 lbs, he was a man of enormous appitites, and so he died far too young in 1995.

Funny as inferno comedia, he was always quick with a quip. A transplant from Brooklyn New York, the good Cap'n was always a party waiting to happen.

On this day, "Tiny" took me all over Denver, 'Colorada', starting from his home in Northglenn,
--continuing south on the Valley Highway, I-25 into Downtown Denver via 17th st, out east Colfax avenue, by East High school and on to the Stock show yards and under the I-70 overpass viaduct.

We also see El Capitan schmoozing with some of his fans on the Pearl street Mall in Boulder. The famous Boulder Mall is where all the crazies hang out, especially at night.
It's no different now, 20 years later.

Here is one of the Captain's more auspicious moments captured on video, a little film I made of him in '87 called "Drab Days in Suburbia"

I miss the big lug. This is my video tribute to a man that lived large before it was chic. A toast to you, oh Captain, my Captain!

  • I too had the pleasure of meeting and getting to know (slightly) the "Captain of Pleasure." He was living proof of the old saying "What you see is what you get."

Denver, as shown in this video, hasn't changed much.

The one part of this movie I found interesting was the music. I question whether the Captain would've approved.
