This opera had a great influence on me, for I majored in Harp at Cal State University Sacramento and made my living with the Harp in so. cal playing in restaurants and weddings. D. Alexandr D'Maddalena
If this of 1983 (I still remember the decoration) this were in Bayreuth. In this year I were my first time in Bayreuth and saw the Tannhäuser, still one of my favorite operas.
Years ago, I saw Richard Versalle in Korngold's Die tote Stadt in the Netherlands (concert performance) with a young Deborah Voigt as Marie/Marietta. They were both very very good.
This guy was a friend of mine. Richard Versalle. He had an unfortunate demise when he fell to his death on the stage of the MET during the production of the Makropulous Case in 1996. This must be the recording of him at Bayreuth. I guess he is immortal now. Thanks for posting this.

Though German seems not to be the native tounge of this 'tannhäuser' he does an excellent performance.
This is what I call a "metal-tenor". ;-) Great!
