A short video of BKV's engine- still running well after 139,000 miles (complete with long pause for some pre-heating). This is a Land Rover 2.5-litre Diesel Turbo engine, producing 85 rampaging horsepower. The vehicle is a 1990 Land Rover Ninety CSW.

  • Hi is that the same engine used in a black cab it sound the same my be not i think a perkins engine was in a black cab

  • The 'classic' Black Cab- the Austin FX4- used the non-turbocharged version of this engine in the 1980s. I don't think they ever used Perkins engines- the last FX4s used Nissans, and the modern ones have Ford or VM turbodiesels.

  • Had I taken the head off to find ruined hotspots, cracked pistons, coked-up valves and general engine death I'd have considered dropping a Tdi in but it was perfect apart from the failed head gasket, a bit of bore scuffing on two cylinders- I change the oil every 4k and hopefully it will go for another 150,000 miles.

  • @jozg44 Bloody hell, I reckon I'd have gone with a tdi if presented with the same issue, I'm currently trying to blow mine up to give myself an excuse to do it :) Then again, I expect your engine will go on forever now if you drive it right. I'm envious of your fuel economy by the way, I get around 22!

  • Hehe- no. The head gasket failed and so I took the chance to give it a full rebuild- rebore, new pistons, new bearings, new camshaft, overhauled injectors/pump etc so the airbox is nice and clean. When the video was made it breathed a bit of oil into the filter- not too much that a K&N filter and a clean-out with the degreaser every service wouldn't cope with though.

  • @jozg44 2 years on have you got an air box full of oil and consumption closer to 20mpg now?

  • nice sound!!

  • Well have you seen the new Defender diesels, only a 2.4 common rail diesel from a Ford Transit with only 90kW of power, but... 360Nm of torque (!!!), to tow a dead sumo wrestler, yes pleae, to go in a drag race with a Skyline, no thanks.

  • Thanks- I quite agree. This particular type isn't meant to be one their best, but I'm very happy with it. Not very fast, but it has loads of torque, pulls well and does around 28-30 MPG.

  • Great engine, bloody good these Land-Rover diesels!
