My goal for this level was to create an environment that gives the player a sense of loneliness and despair. After being left at the base of the frigid mountain, the torches reveal the only path forward--towards the mysterious stone gateway ahead. My technical goals for this level included exploring the terrain system, fire particle effects, skyboxes, cutscene creation using Unreal Cascade, and the creation of snow effects.

  • How the falling snow-effect was made? It is a particle system or just planes with snow-material?

  • @XlorD59 Planes with a scrolling UV snow material. You can visit my website to download a case study of the whole process.

  • one thing I feel when I watch this is is:

the burning torches give the level a slight industrial feel. like there is other life on the planet. remove all signs of man's existence and I think that would make it perfect.

  • @CDBigShow Thanks for the comment. You hit the nail right on the head with your analysis--the burning torches are the one thing in the level that's "alive" and is totally out of place, which I felt gave contrast to the otherwise desolate environment.

However, when I get around to revamping this level, I'll see if I can't change some things around a bit. : )

  • really nice !! Can you tell me how the snow was made please?

  • @1gabcoutureb

It was made within the Unreal Development Kit game engine. I modeled some of the assets in Maya and finished the rest within the editor.

  • Wow, that snow effect is so realistic! I can see the details on the individual crystals!

    ...

    >finds out the YouTube snow effect is still on

    ...Oh. Still good, though!

  • would be better if you create models of the rocks in 3ds max or so and then insert into udk.

  • Nice, How did you make that cool snow ??

  • The falling snow lloks great! the mountains look WAY too short though. Like the comment below me said, the torches are almost as tall as them.

  • Something looks weird with your mountains. They dont give me the feel that you are high up in the mountains. And your torches are like almost as big at some of the mountains, I think you need to keep into consideration of your scale in the level.
