Where did you get that rib?

That's awesome!
I can generally get a pot tap-centered ok, but then it seams to move while I am turning it. Then I retap. Turn some more. Retap. - by the time I am done the rims all flat or I've tapped a dent into the side.
LOL! I'm going to try use a chuck for a while on my goblets. (they're small enough - I think the lightness of them leads to bumping them out of center when trimming.)
Good show.

Yeah, Spain could be the place to be.
I like a good Panama hat. Love how you can scrunch it up in one hand and the fibres don't crack.
I nearly bought one of your big American Stetsons last year, but I do love my good old Aussie Akubra. Maybe a Panama hat for the cricket this year, while I watch Australia defeat the Poms.
Cheers, Andrew.
P.S. we had a hot summer this year too. And 10 odd years of drought. We've had some good rain this week, so cross your fingers for us.

Hey Andrew, I'll trade places with ya, for the past week we have had temps over 97degrees F. with humidity of 80%. Of course I'm in Florida, USA but still. . . It's Hot!! Simon's the coolest don't you agree, Panama hat and all, kinda like the Indiana Jones of potters don't you think?!

Hi Simon,
It doesn't take long for us to fill up our studios now does it!?!I can remember just a few short months ago you had plenty of room in yours and now it looks as thou you've been there for years - kinda gives it that homey feel doesn't it!!!!Thanks for the trimming lesson again, it never gets "old". The tap centering is getting easier, I'm determined to get it down right so I'll just "keep practicing"!!!.
Warm regards from Debbie in digusting hot Florida

Oh My Gosh - how excited am I! Simon - you encouraged me to try tap centering again, which I just couldn't get the hang of and I discovered the secret (for me, anyway). I previously did not have the wheel going fast enough. Hooray! I just successfully tap centered all the work I did yesterday! Thank you!

Looks like you need to bring your mirror outside to save on your neck strain. Love the birds tweeting and your hummimg reminds me of my childhood working with my Dad outside his tool shed!
Happy Dads Day all.
Thanks again Simon!
simon, so why trim the pots? I threww my first coffee mug the other day, and tried to center it on the wheel head to trim. I tried to center the base and could never get it right, should I do it upside down? but why trim?

@BowskinArchery Why do we trim a pot ? Whether to trim or not to trim this is the question ! trimming is generally about carving a foot on a pot like a wide bowl. Sometimes one cannot get the narrow foot one wants from just throwing as the pot would collapse as the base or foot would be too narrow.Trimming helps us loose some clay at the base where a pot might be heavy & narrows the foot giving lift and elegance to the form......

@BowskinArchery ...cont) trimming is liked by most people but also can be a waste of time and an excuse for not throwing a pot well in the first place...the good becoming the enemy of the best one could argue! many pots do not require trimming ...if they were thrown better to start with ! One can "wet trim" using one's throwing stick by pairing away from the base and narrowing the base as one finishes the base of a pot. You can trim the pot upside down yes of course. SL

Simon,
I notice that now that you that another wheel you use the one outside more. Do you just like working outside more, or do you use the inside wheele only for smooth clay and the outside one for groggy? or other reasons?

yes well observed...actually its as you say ,the inside one is for smooth stoneware clay throwing & the outside one i use with the coarser groggier clay . Now the weather is warmer its nice to be more outside as well !
