Neoliberal economics is not about creating a middle class, but creating an elite society, by massively concentrating wealth in the hands of as few people as possible. No laws against monopolies simply replaces government monopolies with corporate monopolies. Corporate raiding, junkbonds, S&Ls, downsizing, rightsizing, and offshoring have destroyed the US middle class. It all started with Ronald Reagan.

'Capitalism', or rather neoliberal economics (deregulation, privatisation, free markets), has denuded the US of it's manufacturing base; destroyed the financial markets; replaced incomes with credit; reduced infrastructure to rubble; and has brought the US closer to fascism than ever.
