The Great Geoduck Hunt

February 24th, 2007 will be remembered in the hearts of men forever. That was the day Dowaito-san gathered his most trusted companions and set out to slay the mighty Geoduck! It was a fellowship of 8: Dowaito, Kyle, Carrie, Wing, Hanh, Chris, Megan and myself. We searched long, we fought hard, and by the end of the day we were victorious.

Mere words are not enough to do the event justice. That's why this video exists.

Unfortunately, you dug up a horse clam...

Its a very common mistake but a silly one.

Catching a horse clam is pretty easy, especially when you have 2 x shovels =S

Now go dig another one and use em as crab bait!!!

Not even worth eating IMHO as they are mostly shell by weight, incredibly tough and leathery siphon and belly filled with nauseating goop D:

Cought that right from the get go... thats a horse clam. Horse clam are not even worth eating, use them for crab bait like the other person said, don't even need that low of a tide to get horse clams. I am 19, been geoducking for atleast 4 years... Going geoducking this week -3.9 and -4.2, maybe i will make a real geoduck video and show you :)

no, not at all. not one bit.

its neck is retracting.... BUT this not even a geoduck, this is a horseclam, geoducks live 3-4 FEET under the sand, horseclams live 1-2 feet down. big difference in everyway, especially taste, we use these for crab bait!!!!!!!!! lol geoduck is were its at!!!

geoducks do not "dig" at all after a certain age, they have a upside down mushroom shaped anchoring system, not a digging foot like a razorclam or cockle...... geoducks have the crazy long neck like you said.

thats a freaking horseclam, either a pacific gaper or a fat gaper. not a geoduck, although they are related. but VERY VERY VERY different in taste and a bit different in looks. very different to the seasoned ducker!!!

I believe that is incorrect...Geoducks don't dig downward while you are digging for them. Their necks can stretch an incredible length, basically from where their shell is static in the sand to the surface of the sand. When you dig, and if they can sense a disruption in surface tension they will retract their neck which can be very fast. To dig them without anything but your hands is an awesome workout and quite an accomplishment :)

I live in Port Orchard,Wa. I am just out he door to capture a "Beastie" or three. I hope! Maybe some Horse clams also. If you have ever attempted this you know the struggle... the clam shells,glass, other riff raff that an cut your hand and arm. This is hunting, some get a chance at living on. Before I cut them I burn sage and cedar and give them a thanks and blessing for their fight and the protien they provide. Be well... and ...dig deeep.
