"Black Bottom" on a player-piano

As I understand it.....this type of "player" system is either go or no go. The punched hole activates the key. Unlike the Welte reproducing system that has feeling. The roll was made on a piano like(someone played the song) machine that punched the holes. The rolls were duplicated on other machines. Extra notes could be added. Often, the songs have so many extra notes, it is obvious, that one person couldn't play it. Experienced roll editors could add notes just by looking at the roll.

Thank you very much for this lovely video. Props. It's a good way to explain to the 'new kids' how people 100 years ago were 'sequencing' music.
I am still wondering, how did companies like these 'mass produce' the punctured-holes-scrolls/books .. since it's either an intens manual labor or a slow (now automated) process.

Thank you for this marvelous memory!
My grandma had a black player piano, then my mom inherited it in the middle 1960's. I never heard it play with the roll, however. I don't think it worked or maybe we just didn't have the rolls of music. Maybe that's why I love ragtime music today. (I'm 56)
Which companies manufactured these pianos somewhere before the 1960's?

Makes sense! I'm a bit of a nerd I guess!
The whole roll is the key board, but the dots to the extreme right seem to not be playing... like there is another part that I don't hear in the video. Maybe the roll is intended for a machine with percussion or bells?

There are perforations far left and right that automatically express the music on a different player system call the AMPICO system. My piano is not an AMPICO player and so those holes don't do anything on it.

Nice repair job at the end of the roll! Were you able to salvage most or any of the expression?

No Jim - it was mangled, so I did what I could.
