Iraq's foreign minister said Thursday the country is concerned about instability in neighbouing Iran but respects the decision of the Iranian political system.
In an interview with Reuters, Foreign Minister Hoshiyar Zebari said the unrest in the aftermath of disputed presidential elections was a concern to Iraq.
[Hoshiyar Zebari, Iraqi Foreign Minister]:
"Iran instability is a cause of concern for us, as has been the instability in Iraq has been a cause of concerns to Iran and other neighboring countries, because the regional security is intertwined, interdependent. We, as Iraqis, respect the will of the Iranian people and we respect the political system and we are not parted to choose or to make favoritism in terms of their choices."
Zabari also said Iraq does not have any problem working with Ahmadinejad if he were elected.
[Hoshiyar Zebari, Iraqi Foreign Minister]:
"We don't have any difficulties in dealing with Ahmadinejad because he knows our position and he knows the problems and difficulties and what needs to be done, you see, to upgrade, to bolster Iraq-Iran relations on every field on the basis of mutual respect, non-intervention in each other's affairs and respect each other's sovereignty."
Iran is seeing its worst unrest since the 1979 Islamic revolution, as opposition protesters take to the streets in a rare challenge to the authorities after the presidential elections.
The Iranian government has banned all foreign media to report, film or take pictures in Tehran, but amateur video uploaded onto YouTube showed mass demonstrations continuing into the night on Wednesday.
Other video uploaded onto YouTube showed day shots of protesters being pushed back by riot police.
Baghdad's Shi'ite-led government has good ties with Shi'ite Muslim Iran, but the presence of U.S. troops in Iraq has long been a source of tension with Tehran.
