  • This is, by popular opinion, Oistrakh's best recording of the Sibelius Violin Concerto, and Sibelius' own favorite. In 1954/55, Oistrakh was at the height of his powers, technically and tonally, and this recording showcases both strengths.

This particular recording caused some difficulty in creating the video; the original recording is quite ambient and ravishing to listen to with a CD and proper sound system, but since YT tends to condense the sound abit, some technical wizardry was needed.

  • I'm a Finn, studied some music, listened to quite many versons of this wonderful piece of music - and I have to say: this is one of the best versions I've ever heard!

  • This is excellent, to my taste. Thanks for the video

I'm a Russian. Studied some music, listened also to some...

Oisthrakh with Sibelius is... just great. To my mind, the greatest...

And I heard THIS VIOLIN alive in THIS HALL! (40 years ago). With a better orchestra. (Surely, NOT with better violinist)

I beleive that it impresses you. I wish you heard this very recording live (I didn't, I just heard this very instrument, that Oistrakh used).

You must be proud of being a Finn! You surely are!

    Sibelius is great!

  • This piece is one of my new favorites after recently hearing it performed by the Nashville Symphony. It was truly incredible :) The soloist was Stefan Jackiw, and without a doubt that live performance was so charged and just magnificent! It was so beautiful, but it saddens me that that one performance was the only time such magic happened. Now, I can only look back on it fondly.. Still, breathtaking. The first movement is my favorite, with the fourth closely following.

  • This is the first recording I heard of this concerto - I still have the 10" vinyl. About the same time, Oistrakh came to Australia and I saw him in a special concert at the Sydney Conservatorium and we met him afterwards briefly. He was certainly one of the really great violinists.

  • shame about the heavy noise reduction that's been applied which 'pumps' the sound, making his wonderful tone sound uneven and lumpy. Greatness still comes through though. Thanks for sharing.

  • @UltimateViolin

I was wondering where you found out that this was Sibelius' own favourite performance -- I can't find any reference to it.

    Thanks!

I love this performance -- thanks so much for posting it!

  • 3:35 - What an absolutely stunning tone!
