  • Would you believe this went all the way to #1

in Philadelphia back in the day (some time when '65 was turning into '66 I think)? No, not just on the low-watt R&B outlets of WHAT or WDAS-FM, but on the mainstream rock and roll Top 40 big heavy, WIBG 990 ("Radio 99) with its big 50,000-watt signal carrying this great sound all throughout the Greater Delaware Valley. You better believe it.

  • I think it should have peaked higher than #41. "JMO" Thanks for the comment!!

  • i heard this song on xm and have been lookin fo it since, it so catchy and awesome!!!!!!!!!!! wat happened to dis group?

  • Originating in Chicago, the C.O.D.'s exploded on soul radio in 1965 with the infectious "Michael the Lover" on Kellmac Records. The Mad Lads and the Jackson Five, among others, redid the boastful tune; J5 cut the tune in the late '60s, but Motown iced it. Ruby Stackhouse accompanies the trio on the song, supplying backing vocals alongside Larry Brownlee, Robert Lewis, and Carl Washington, otherwise known as the C.O.D.'s.

  • This was one of my favorite 45s to play as a kid. I was too young to remember it when it was out, but something about it makes me feel happy. Maybe it was played and left in my subconscious mind.

  • Thanks for the comment!!

  • I love this song. It brings back pleasant memories from the 60"s.

  • This was a huge hit in the East Falls project .

  • Great song, really brings back memories. The COD's also had another record that sounded very much like Michael The Lover. Does anyone know or remember the name of it?

    Thanks

  • I remember listening to this song on 154 WABQ in Cleveland, Ohio back in the 60's. It's a great song. Thanks for posting this.

  • It's been more than 40 years since I heard this!!!

  • Great song!!

  • Definitely a big hit on 560 WHYN in Springfield, Mass - early '66 (Jan-Feb).

  • I have an aircheck of Wibbage, and it's on there. Number 13 that week! Love it!

  • larry brownlee who wrote all of the c.o.d.'s material went on to become a member of the lost generation and then mystique. his sucess as a songwriter with those groups and some things for other groups continued thru the seventies. sadly, though, he was murdered in chicago in 1978.
