On Tuesday, September 20th, 2011 chess legend Garry Kasparov, together with European Chess Union President Silvio Danailov, presented at the European Parliament the program 'Chess in European Schools'. The program is designed to promote chess in schools throughout Europe by offering chess curriculums, chess materials, chess teachers and communication material to encourage and motivate children to discover and learn the game. • Chess can certainly improve the individual's logical reasoning, analytical and critical thinking. It mirrors one's character during the most difficult situations imaginable.By playing Chess seriously, one learns how to be objective and at the same time how to design a grandplan in accordance to its objectives. It teaches patience and perseverance despite adversities.

  • Chess can be an effective social program, and can cultivate the character of the student(like other sports played with passion). But I also came across articles which discuss that , chess will help in improving the mathematical ability of the student ?!. The logic of Maths and logic of chess are poles apart, is not it?. If parents are worried that their kids are wasting time in playing Video games, tell kids to write a computer program which will play a simple game(start with Tic Tac Toe).

  • @georgegrasser I discovered years ago and continue to have confirmed to me that USCF usually ignores people with problems. They don't have time for problems or even for promoting chess. They are only interested in collecting their fees and flying around the country first class. And they even refuse to rate your games for that annual fee; you have to pay an additional per game fee for that! Fortunately there are alternative organizations sprouting up but people have to step up and support them.

  • Great chessplayer, but shitty "politician" he is. Schools are not the places for politicians to interfere with. It should be parents to decide what stuff their kids will learn - not officials or euro-deviants. It's a high time for politicians to leave schools alone, privatise them and stay fucking away from the way parents want to bring up their kids. Kasparov has been focused on chess so much, that he can't see simple life things anymore...

  • How Can I participate in this project if I Am a teacher and I offer chess as an optative subject in the Catalan Secondary School?

  • If Polgar loses weight she'd be hot!

  • Good idea, but it should be done in national states, no in european union !

  • Some towns and states even fight Chess for Children. Last August I got a $500 fine for offering free Chess Lessons to a few of the neighborhood kids.

Three years ago I was kicked out of a library for teaching Chess to latchkey kids.

I notified the USCF but they just ignored me.
