Callas is introduced to Aristotle Onassis and they fall in love despite the fact they both married. She renounces her American citizenship to nullify her marriage to the Catholic Menghini and to becomes a Greek citizen, which was a result of her yearning to be Mrs. Aristotle Onassis, who was recently divorced. (The Greek Orthodox Church only recognizes marriages amongst the Orthodox). It was during this period that her singing wasnt at par due to her waning interest in opera. However, she would be heartbroken and devasted when Aristotle married Jacqueline (Jackie) Bouvier Kennedy.
