LIBS is a method of elemental analysis that uses a laser beam to excite a target material to emit light at frequencies characteristic of its chemical composition. In this way, the elements in the target can be identified and their concentrations determined. LIBS is also being developed for the identification of chemical compounds. At ARA, we have a state-of-the-art LIBS and optical spectroscopy laboratory for study of fundamental processes involved in the LIBS method and for design, development, and fabrication of LIBS instruments.
