The INS Kochi, the second of the three Project 15-A stealth destroyers was launched on Friday by Madhulika Verma, the wife of the country's Navy staff chief.
[Admiral Nirmal Verma, Navy Staff Chief]:
"Whites, the navy firmly stands behind continuing to encourage indigenous ship building capability. There is an urgent need to usher in change and emulate contemporary practices being followed worldwide, to improve build periods, and quality and more importantly to make the process more cost effective."
The ship has advanced stealth features, which make it less vulnerable to detection by enemy radar and will be fitted with state-of-the-art weapon systems.
In addition, four AK-630 rapid-fire guns and a medium range gun will boost the ship's close-range defense capability.
The ship will also be fitted with twin-tube torpedo launchers and anti-submarine rocket launchers.
