I think that since the actual plow is in the middle, they want the *strongest* horses right there to get the most power. Which isn't necessarily going to be the biggest. But at any rate, those horses are beautifully trained. Look at the driver. Two lines to control 6 horses. If those horses didn't want to be doing that, they'd easily take off, possibly kill the driver, and destroy the plow and harness. Around here I see 4-horse hitches driven by small children.

@triptoheaveandho i am sory for all the typos,,but just this past suimmer i had to go out and take water to buggy horses that were left outside inthe blistering sun and heat =so the teen Amish kids could go and swim inthe local pool....they dont wanna be "English" and they feel they are superior ==but if they wanna live like 'English';=lrt them drive a car to the pool.. im tired of the protectionthey are aforded because they are a money machine here in Lancaster county

amish use Rejected standardbred horse that werent fast enought to race these horse were not meanty for heavy work like hauiling a family around in a buggy-so if they are so gdoly why dont they use draft horses -meant for heavy work for the buggies?/simpl,e they arent fast enough and they dont look as good. and they are not treayted well at al
and dont sy i dont knoiw bnercause i lived around the Amish all of my life and very close to New holland sales stables ...

That must be heavy ground to plow, that he actually needs six horses to actually plow it. But I must say that I like to see old ways and traditions, like the Amish maintain. It's interesting to see how our ancestors would have probably done farming and plowing without machines :')
