Regarding the street cars, there were a million more people in the city back then, and the volume of cars is, at some level, a function of mass transit. However, I think that the bus system was much less developed when the street cars were around. My understanding is that the bus only went on streets that did not have a street car. In essence, the more extensive bus system now is a more flexible replacement for the street cars.

@chicagoelectricbicyc It's a great idea but with the volume of traffic on the road nowadays I don't know where we could put light rail. At least Chicago has a pretty good subway and El system. Can you bring electric bikes onto CTA & metra trains?
