This film produced by the outdoor advertising industry in the 1940s is a great slice of everyday history. It shows some classic product advertisements, vintage Chicago street scenes and antique vehicals. We also get an in depth story about how outdoor advertising works. This third part is in gorgeous color including some great footage of public transit.

  • notice the light rails? That would be sweet if they had that today.

  • @chicagoelectricbicyc It's a great idea but with the volume of traffic on the road nowadays I don't know where we could put light rail. At least Chicago has a pretty good subway and El system. Can you bring electric bikes onto CTA & metra trains?

  • Regarding the street cars, there were a million more people in the city back then, and the volume of cars is, at some level, a function of mass transit. However, I think that the bus system was much less developed when the street cars were around. My understanding is that the bus only went on streets that did not have a street car. In essence, the more extensive bus system now is a more flexible replacement for the street cars.
