Most Radio Shack stores are more than happy to program these scanners for free. All they do is take their display model PRO-106 that's already programmed and use it to "clone" PRO-106 scanners that customers bring in needing programmed. It involves hooking both scanners up via a simple data cable and only takes a few seconds to do. Of course you'll eventually want to learn how to program it yourself, but Radio Shack stores will help you get going from the beginning.

Thanks for a clear explanation. Tried on the pro-197 (base model). Scans without any signal though. I see all channels have been saved, but nothing heard. Guess it's back to drawing board for me.

How would you program P25 onto a scanner that doesn't have a P25 option? Like a Pro 163. It only has Motorola and other ones, but not P25.
