no it was longer ago, in the 80s. This was Sayama's public demonstration of the new fighting sport he started, Shooto (shooting, shoot-wrestling) in the early 80s.

You're right. I've been doing Taekwondo for a while and my trainer has told me stories about masters who "don't pull their kicks" whilst sparring with students as a way to discipline them. Eastern mentality is a lot different from western. You should watch Inoki slapping and then punching Lyoto Machida as a show of respect.
