This is the demo stage from Frontier Aja's sequel, Koumajou Densetsu II: Stranger's Requiem!

[Video description updated on 2012-01-16, see below]

Like its predecessor, this is a Castlevania-style game that uses characters from a series of overhead-style shooters known in Japan as the Touhou Project. You can definitely see the shooter-style action in this game, as well.

The game itself was released during Comiket 79 in December 2010. There exists a trial version of the game which was hosted on Frontier Aja's blog; however, that blog (and most of Frontier Aja's website) seems to be down. As soon as I have an updated link for the trial and the blog, I will link them here.

If you are looking to download the game's patches, as of 2012-01-16, Frontier Aja's main website currently hosts links to official patch locations. Those links are located at:
http://aja-games.com/update.html

However, you will find that these patches do not include the English and French language pack. This language pack was provided as a separate download. Frontier Aja's main website currently does not link to the language pack; however, the file is still available, from the same site that hosts the game's other patches:
http://aja-games.xsrv.jp/downloads/Koumajou2/koumajou2_language_files.zip

This language pack appears to be mirrored by other sites as well, but I'm not able to confirm that they match the file linked above. However, I can personally confirm that the above file is identical to the language pack I downloaded over a year ago. If file integrity is important to you and you know how to find the MD5 checksum of a file, the above-linked file's MD5sum is:
02ce1b38c9cf124cbfe39ce62b095012

Sadly, there is no "central" place to order your own copy of this game; however, I can say that I placed my own order with the Palet Mail Service, which does ship internationally. (Great news for those of us living outside Japan!) Once on their page, click the "Frontier Aja" link or search for "Koumajou":

The game demo seemed to run fine on my non-Japanese version of Windows XP. However, if you encounter problems loading it or displaying Japanese characters on a non-Japanese system, you may need to install and use Microsoft's AppLocale utility, and use that to open the game and its patch files. The utility is currently located at:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=8c4e8e0d-45d1-4d9...

And finally... yes, my gameplay was really poor in this video. The last time I played the original game was at the start of this year, and this was literally my third time opening the demo; the first two times were spent changing around the controls until they felt right on my PS2 controller. I miss being able to slide. :(

  • For those who might be reading this, Frontier Aja's blog seems to be down for some reason. Their website itself still seems to be partially up and linking to the game's patch files. The English language pack doesn't show up in their links, but it still appears to be hosted by Xsrv, Frontier Aja's file host.

I've updated the video description with as much information as I know, and will add more as I find it. Thanks. :)

  • this game rules

  • @Iucifer it's a tribute to castlevania games so yes it is going to be very similar.

  • @Hellfire99X ok thanks for the help

  • @gameboycolor47

Ahh, you mean for the trial game? You go to the trial link above, click the "ダウンロード" link next to the ( Koumajou2_trial3 ) text, save the ZIP file to wherever you'll find it later (i.e.: your desktop)... once it's finished downloading, double-click the ZIP file to open it, drag and drop the "Koumajou2_trial3" out to your desktop to extract it... then double-click the new folder, and there will be two EXEs: "config.exe", and "koumajou2_trial3.exe" -- run the _trial3 EXE to play.

  • @Hellfire99X i meant how do you start up the game from your comp like open the game not how to play it xD

  • @gameboycolor47

Hmm, you know... if you were walking into the game completely blind, that WOULD be a problem! /boggle

Fortunately, you can pause this video at around the 0:07 mark to see the default keyboard keys/joystick buttons used for the game. It's been a couple months since I last played, and I've never tried playing with the keyboard before... but you should be able to experiment and find out what each of the Z-X-C-V-Space keys do, and remap 'em in the Options - Pad Config menu if needed.

  • @Hellfire99X sorry one more question how would i start the game if i cant you know read it xD

  • @Hellfire99X well it should work if it has unicode-ware so yay no fixing :D

  • @gameboycolor47

On that note, I have no idea how Vista or 7 handle non-language programs. I hear they're Unicode-aware or something like that, so they should launch without any issues... but I don't use Vista or 7, so. :(
