The three trainers on the route after Ilex Forest give you Soft Sand, which will only be of use for Penny if you get Earthquake later on. Soft Sand increases the power of ground moves by a little, like Mystic Water does for water type moves, and Charcoal for fire, Miracle Seed, etc. etc.

Brock's Pokemon were Rock AND Ground! That's why electric moves didn't work. They've always been that way. >_>

@Jackitkong ;_; I've been playing pokemon games way too long, I went back too and realized that. I guess I just wasn't used to dual-types 'back in the day' since there were less pokemon. Then I was like "Oh crap, they DID have dual-types in the originals."
