Yes Lincoln was a republican, but, at the time the Republican party was considered the "liberal" party. He was also a member of the National Union.
The democratic party was started by a group of conservative southern plantation owners(Which conservative southerners now make up a majority of the republican party) in order to battle the "liberal" ideals of the republican party.

@itcanbecheezcaketime Actually, I have checked the facts. Most of the deficit during the Obama campaign has come from policy's that were enacted under the Bush Administration. The president responsible for the most drastic increase in the deficit was Reagan when he more it more than tripled.
