DUNCAN - It has been a hot button issue for parents and educators in the public school system. Now trustees in the Cowichan Valley are mounting a campaign that would slash provincial government funding for private independent schools. Under the board's plan that money would go towards public education, which is struggling with another year of budget deficits and cuts.
Cowichan Valley board of education chair Candace Spilsbury says "the rationale is around public schools being underfunded, public schools being the place to produce well-educated citizens that is social and economic sense for us in British Columbia."
The motion to redirect funding will be presented to provincial school trustees at a meeting this weekend. If the trustees decide to endorse the motion, then it goes to the minister of education as a recommendation. From there it's up to the minister to decide whether to act on it.
