Around June 1st of each year, Port Huron is host to a convention of sorts. Port Huron hosts a two week spawn for sturgeon. The action is fast and furious for about a few weeks, then, they move on. There is a "not from this planet" surprise on this video. See if you can find it. It is our goal to have LIVE cameras in place for May 2011 to show our visitors this wonderful event of nature and many more!. Notice the large steel cables lying around down there. They are from the failed attempt in 1890 to raise the M.E. Tremble shipwreck by Henry McMorran. There is an 8 foot sturgeon on this video that would have been alive to see that failed attempt! Enjoy!!

  • The reason you don't really see any eggs when they do their twisting mating shuffle, is because of the stones you see in this video. They sink and have "sticky" on them to attach to the stones. Greg Lashbrook and Kathy Johnson have wonderful videos with high def that may show a quick glimpse. Their site is GregoryAD. They have videos for sale that give a great narrative of the spawning process.

  • Could I get any original footage? I am arranging a video for a traveling sturgeon exhibit and would love to get any original sturgeon video.

    Thanks - G.R.fitch

  • What's the "not from this planet" surprise you mentioned in the description? I couldn't find it, but it got my interest. Also, what time does the 8 footer appear? If it really was 8 feet then that's a world class lake sturgeon. Probably pushing 250 pounds.

Either way, nice video. It would've been an experience to swim right alongside them.

  • great video, many thanks for that, is there anyway possible to see the actuall eggs being laid ? thanks

  • Keep da fishies safe!

  • at 2:50 is that some kind of light, or just a reflective object on the river bottom??
