Minister Patrus Ananias, Brazil´s Minister of Social Development, briefed President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and Secretary Esperanza Cabral, along with the rest of the delegation, on the Bolsa Famila program, which assists 12 million poor families in Brazil.
Bolsa Famila is part of the Brazilian government´s welfare program centered on giving grants and financial assistance to the indigent families in Brazil. This anti-poverty scheme is the focal aspect of the social policy of President Luis Inacio "Lula" da Silva, and is gaining popularity worldwide for its effective scheme in reducing poverty incidences. The program uses conditionsl cash transfers that gives cash (in magnetic cards) directly to poor families who pass the criteria, with certain conditions including the compulsary sending on children to school, and undergoing regular medical check-ups and vaccination.
Secretary Cabral has expressed optimism that the program has plenty of aspects that may be adapted in the Philippine setting, as the Arroyo government continues to prioritize its fight against poverty with initiatives and programs that will help provide food on every table, give jobs, and provide infrastructure for the delivery of basic services.
