I was watching Star Trek, and I realized that if impulse power is sub light speed, how do they manage to avoid time dilation...without technobabble?

  • Which Star Trek?

  • @ZZDaikun To quote the great maverick Sarah Palin, all of them!

  • Yes?

  • @VarmitCoyote Fuck yes.

  • @stardude692001 No more personal attacks or you're blocked. Keep it civil in here, okie day?

  • @callmesora I'm sorry, I don't mean to flame. . . but are you on coke? If English is not your first language I apologize but the grammar of what you just posted makes your statement unreadable to me.

  • @stardude692001 only time mass effects time dilation is when it comes to gravity, IE, black holes. Reducing the mass of anything does not allow particles of energy to exceed the speed of light. to exceed the speed you need to warp space.

Our nervous systems are basically electric pulses. Those pulses by the laws of physics can't go pass the speed of light. thus a slow down of time.

Inertial Dampeners only affect the effects on people and objects of quick acceleration and deceleration.

  • @callmesora

well I would have to say that inertial dampener work by reducing mass "by unknown future means" so they should also reduce the time dilation. hell if you can reduce mass to zero you can travel at the speed of light and with no time dilation. but this probably does not happen in star trek.

  • @masamunesword

The deflector is for, as its name suggests, deflecting particles and debris as to prevent damage being inflicted to the star ship. ex. A grain of sand can puncture a hole in a ship at high velocities.

The inertial dampeners only prevent outside forces, such as speeding up, slowing down, being blasted with a large kinetic force (such as a torpedo), from causing objects, and beings, inside from being whiplashes into death. It has no effect on the time displacement.

  • impulse should only be about half the speed of light, they don't have the power to accelerate faster. anything below 9/10th time dilation is negligible.

The problem is that they talk about having to fly though entire sectors at impulse, reference in the omega molecule ep of voyager, this would take decades at that speed.

so in short plot holes and bad physics.

  • @callmesora : Rest of it is taken care of by inertial dampeners and the deflector dish.

  • now as to the answer to the question..... Maybe they don't, and its one of the big reasons why people live such a long time in the future beyond the advances in medical sciences.

  • @masamunesword unfortunate with that is that the Impulse Drive isn't part of the Warp Drive system. Its effectively, as Memory Alpha (Wiki) puts it, an "Augmented Fusion Rocket". Impulse drives don't warp space. =\

  • The "God you are such a damn nerd" answer is that the ships don't technically travel faster than light, but instead warp space (hence "Warp Factor) reducing the distance between their ship and destination.
