The objective of our Missing Persons documentary is to address the depersonalizing effects of globalization in the lives of consumers and their jobs. Throughout our research we have found that consumers are frequently searching for more efficient ways to accomplish simple tasks, such as renting movies, ordering pizza, or making travel plans. The internet has created a solution to these tasks by providing simple, user friendly websites. These websites allow consumers to tailor their orders to meet their specific needs without leaving the comfort of their homes or having contact with other people. Through the accessibility of the internet, some jobs have started to become obsolete. For example, on Netflix.com consumers can watch movie trailers, read movie reviews, and select a movie to be delivered to their home without ever making contact with an employee. Similarly, Dominos.com allows customers to specifically select the type of pizza crust, toppings, and sides for their order, pay for the pizza online, and have the pizza delivered to their home with very little contact from the local restaurant. Travelocity.com has downsized the need for travel agents by providing easy access to airlines, hotels, rental cars, and other travel needs. Now consumers have become their own travel agent.
Due to the many incentives brought about by connectiveness, most consumers fail to realize the ways in which this technology is dehumanizing our lives. As Thomas Friedman states in The Lexus and the Olive Tree, The more wired and networked together, the easier it becomes for each of us to work alone Globalization is responsible for the increasing number of online stores and restaurants that, while making simple tasks more efficient for consumers, are directly contributing to the depersonalization of modern society.
