A common misconception is that data compression like MP3 is somehow related to dynamic range compression as shown in the Loudness War clip. This video seeks to differentiate the two uses of the word "compression."

  • MORE VIDEOS, PLEASE !!! !!! !!!

  • @almazonly Thanks! I'm working on a series about analog and digital domains, dither, frequency, and other concepts. It's been a busy month, but the first of those should be out soon.

  • Thanks for video. Do you have your own website for more information?

  • @SymphonyOfDestruct99 Not yet, but I'm working on one, and making more videos to come soon. I taught audio & music theory to adults and high school students for 9 years, so I have had a lot of time to organize the concepts to help beginners learn them. Thanks.

  • Thanks for the comments! I'm writing scripts & preparing graphics for a couple more videos and intend to have them out in the next few weeks.

  • Nice job Matt. I've been showing you previous video for all my recording students at the University of Nevada, Reno and our private classes as well as my clients. This will be a welcome addition. Thank you.

  • @morcwbl Thank you! I'm really glad it's helpful. @ Others who can't see the original video: I think this is a YouTube glitch. I will try to fiddle with some settings to fix it. Meanwhile, you can still find it by typing in "Loudness War."

  • @LoudnessWar I think it is great that you and other people like you are speaking against extreme dynamic range compression. Also how can I as a consumer fight against this practice while still supporting the the artist I listen to.

  • That was bizarre. Your compressed "Here's a quiet sound; and a loud sound" at 0:45 sounded uncannily like radio.

  • more videos, more!!

  • Well explained.

Now let's retrain the "masses"'s ears to cherish dynamic range, once again... :-)

  • I have to say I am getting so tired of all of this crap with music today. The last cd I bought which was Justice's Audio Video Disco sounds like absolute crap. It's compressed, clips and exhausting to listen to. The sad fact is the digital release is less compressed and sounds much better. The music biz is just giving more people a reason to not buy music anymore. Even though it's 2011 and technology is more advanced than ever before, but somehow cds sounded better in 1989.
