Not that it makes it better, but hyena fratricide usually happens by the dominant sibling controlling access to the mother's milk. It will keep the other sibling captive and too frightened of a beating to leave the den to feed. Meanwhile, the den is too small for mom to go down and bring up the submissive cub. Some mothers preemptively separate twins into different dens to prevent this.
You'd think this drive would get worse as the cubs get older, but the opposite happens. Go figure.
