Even at age 67, Nicholas Nowillo thought nothing of heading out onto a dark street Wednesday night of Sept 03, 2008, to protect a neighbor from a suspicious stranger lurking on the block.
The act of generosity cost him his life. Nowillo died after doing the most mundane of New York favors: escorting a woman to her car late at night.
Michelle Koutsoubelis considered Nowillo a surrogate dad and asked him to accompany her because she was nervous about a man skulking around their Long Island City block.
She was right to be worried. Outside on Crescent St., 43-year-old Eric Cherry was trying to break into cars to feed his crack addiction, cops said.
When Nowillo confronted Cherry about 10:40 p.m., the thief knocked him to the ground, kicked him where he lay and fled.
"He was no match for this monster. He tried to defend himself, but he was left to die. On September 04, 2010, the town of Dutch Kills, Queens in Long Island City, named a street after him---Nicolas A. Nowillo Place.
Great man, great family.
