It was twenty-one hundred years ago that Italy (Italia) got its name. The name evolved from an interesting series of political and social events which ended in a war between allies, known as the Social War. This documentary, videoed on location in central Italy, traces the evolution of the Italic tribes, and in particular, the growth of the fierce warrior nation of the Peligne. The town of Corfinium, known as the Metropolis of the Peligne is the site of the modern-day town of Corfinio. The documentary includes many historically significant locations and a guided tour of Corfinio's Civic Archaeological Museum.

This four-minute segment is part of the complete DVD which can be purchased at www.aldimarvp.com.

  • Forgot to say the Sabino tribes where the Itaalic and Umbrian tribe.

    Viva Italia

  • Thanks for both of you comments. I did my best to accumulate good information, but some facts don't always show up. Much of what I researched was in Italian and it took me a while to do all the translations. Have a grand week.

  • 'Italia' and similar words used to describe the peninsula as a whole for many centuries, but the first time 'Italia' was used to denote a political entity was during the Social Wars (or 'Italic Wars') of 91-88 B.C., and the specific place with that name was present-day Corfinio.

  • Thanks for your support in this issue. Have a grand day, every day.

  • Italy came from the Italic tribeds in middle Italy (the race that Romans do had problem defeating and attack, Romans also did not contest when we had our own Italic coins), The 2 tribes where the Umbrian and Italic tribe (type Italic tribe in Wikipedia and learn it's history). italy with the North and South united under 1 rule was built.

  • There is no doubt that Corfinio feels patriotic to the word "Italic". I think any other town, in such a position, would act likewise. If I remember correctly, Lutizia, at the museum, said that this was the first time the word "Italic" was inscribed on a coin, thus making the word "Italic" official. She did not say that the word "Italic" was invented there. I agree with you that the word "Italic" was in use prior to 91BC since the Romans were battling the "Italic" tribes in in 500 BC.

  • yes, but you have to consider that the opinion of that museum could be a little "patrotic"... I am italian, and my grandfather comes from sulmona, close to corfinio but the origin of the name "italia" is more ancient than 91b.c.!! it is a historical fact that it has been used by greeks since 500b.c. for the nowadays calabria, southern italy, and just then it has been expanded gradually to north, so also to corfinio and abruzzo.

  • Well yes, there are many possibilities for the origin of name "Italia". However, Corfinio (Corfinium) lays claim to the origin of the name "Italia" and has established a civic museum to the preservation of the Peligne culture. Since my ancestors are from Corfinio I support their claim.

  • oh noooooooo!! this origin of the name ITALIA is not correct!! XD The term ITALIA was assigned by greeks to the extreme end of the italian peninsula, where now is set the Reggio Calabria province, in 500 b.C., and under their rule it was extended to other southern territories.

Romans extended the name 'Italia' to all countries they conquisted gradually from south to north, Corfinium incuded. So the name italia yet referred to other territories, and just had been extended to Corfinio country ;)

  • Grazie. Miei nonni hanno abitato a Corfinio. Certamente questa paese e' importante a me.
