April 18, 2010: The U.S. Supreme Court stuck down a nation-wide law that made it a crime to traffic and create videos depicting animal cruelty, deciding that it limited people's freedom of speech. The decision was 8-1 and the issue was brought up by a case in 2004, United States v. Stevens. Robert J Stevens was sentenced for 37 months in prison for compiling and selling dogfight videos in 2004, however the case was opened up again on Tuesday, April 18, 2010.
This video shows the opinions of various people including New Mexico State University students and an El Paso Humane Society worker on whether it is protection of free speech or advocation of animal abuse to allow the compiling and trafficking of videos depicting animal cruelty.
