Ricki Coughlan, a Sydney ornithologist, showed us these birds in Royal NP outside of Sydney. We had hoped to at least hear lyrebirds while visiting Australia. We certainly did not expect to see them this well.

  • STAR WARS LASERS OMFG LMAO

  • This is a dominance display between two males. All three of the calls which are most prominent here are common territorial and dominance display calls.

The most common call is known as the "Space Invaders" call as it sounds like classic arcade space battle games. This call is also strongly featured in courtship display.

The "plink" call is not mimicry of a "hydraulic ram" as suggested elsewhere in the comments. It's a standard dominance call and is rarely used except in encounters between males.

  • I wouldn't doubt that the sound designer for the original Star Wars used sounds like this, all of the sound effects were from organic sources. There were no synthesized sounds.
