the good people at bethesda thought it was a good idea to permanently lock the gate after you finish the quest and teleport you out. Now I lost a companion and loot...great gamemaking

@MoloMowChow well stuff me then, cos the bloody thing hasn't friggen unlocked...even though I've done the first part of the quest with merdia...ffs this is the BUGGIEST elder scrolls game EVER and it's really shitting me

It opens automatically as part of the quest when you've guided Merdia's light to the final chamber.
I don't believe there's anyway to open before Merdia's quest, nor is there a way to reopen that room once the quest is complete
