  • This is no where near as intense as the book makes this scene, or as it is trying to be.

  • My favourite part of this film is when Bogart is tied up with rope and Bacall puts a cigarette in his mouth for him. When he's seen in profile, the cigarette is so far to the corner of his mouth, you can't see it, just smoke.

  • Oh! there is also a very good tv series with Powers Booth giving an excellent portrayal.

I left out the long goodbye: It's a good movie, except I didn't like how Altman changed the outcome between Marlowe and Terry Malloy. it's more realistic perhaps, but not in keeping with Chandler's view of Marlowe as a contemporary knight. of course Marlowe is as much a fantasy figure as James Bond. But hey, what's wrong with a little fantasy.

  • The brasher doubloon based on the high window with George Montgomery. I think i saw this one.

The falcon takes over based on farewell my lovely, in which the falcon character was subsituted

and time to kill which was based on The High window. In this one the story was adapted for the Michael Shayne character .

NOTE. Chander's own choice for Marlowe was Cary Grant .

  • @irish66 other adaptions of Chandler novels in no particular order

Farewell my lovely and The Big sleep with Robert Mitchum. These were done in the 7o's when Mitchum was too old for the role. But he still gives an excellent portrayal, particularly in the first one. It's probably my favourite portrayal of the character. . Watch out for Sly Stallone in a small role.

Marlowe, based on The Little sister with James Garner and a scene stealing bit by Bruce Lee

  • raymond chandler's marlowe novels are all favourites of mine, except for the last one called "Playback" The best novels are probably "farewell my lovely" and "The long Goodbye" I think the best movie adaptions were Murder my sweet, and the Big sleep. Murder my sweet was based on Farewell my lovely. The title was changed in America, in case cinemagoers thought it was another Dick Powell musical. of course in the Richard Diamond radio series, Powell got to do some sleuthing and singing

Enjoyed that background info about the late great Bob Steel. Let's not forget he also had a memorable small late in his career in the classic late 60's Clint Eastwood Western "Hang 'em High". Naturally he looked QUITE older but he still had that great powerful voice.

  • Famous shooting scene in The Big Sleep. Canino was played by character actor Bob Steel. He was the bullying son in the original movie Of Mice and Men and also made numerous B movie westerns as the good guy.

  • @VanceHill

    Ok, thank you:-)!

  • @Fantasmo81 Originally a series of novels by Raymond Chandler, translated into several different mediums. You want the best film, check out Murder, My Sweet.
