Since big SUVs are so last year, the time has come for Mercedes-Benz to introduce a small SUV. We caught this footage of the 2010 Mercedes-Benz GLK in Death Valley, California, recently and it is indeed smaller than any other Mercedes SUV currently available.

Built on the same chassis as the compact C-Class sedan, the GLK350 (as it's expected to be called), will have a wheelbase and overall length similar to its sedan counterpart. This should put the GLK right in line with other entry-level luxury sport-utilities like the BMW X3 and Land Rover LR2.

As its name implies, the GLK350 will use the latest and greatest 3.5-liter Mercedes V6. With roughly 270 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, it should measure up well to anything else in its class. Expect to see standard all-wheel drive along with the Mercedes seven-speed automatic transmission.

Like its BMW rival, the GLK isn't expected to have much off-road capability. Most of the GLK test mules spotted on the Nürburgring have been wearing low-profile tires with oversize wheels, so expect to see some kind of sport package available as an option. An AMG-tuned model is probably in the cards as well, so if you have the need for a 450-hp SUV that can barely swallow a mountain bike, then you can look forward to a GLK63 sometime in late 2010.

As it stands now, the official unveiling of the standard Mercedes-Benz GLK is expected in early 2008. Production may start later that year, but early 2009 is a more likely time frame. With that in mind, U.S.-spec GLKs should start arriving by the middle of 2009.

  • @DeathValleyRoad oh thanks hahaha

  • @youmils03 Happy 17th birthday for last Saturday

  • @nydeucesproduction Great! They are selling very well. Many Men are tired of driving cars that are feminine. Got mine in December. Barolo Red. Solid as a rock. Has doors like a bank vault. Will runa way and hide from every other compact SUV out there. 143 MPH. 268 HP and a 7 speed will do that! I also love the automatic adaptive suspension. That will be copied by the lesser brands in the next year or so.
