Andreas Ruth started his organ building working with Xaver Bruder, and established his own company in around 1841, which became A. Ruth & Sohn. The company was based in Waldkirch, Germany, and it made both key and keyless book organs, but in the period 1870-1900 was particularly known for its barrel (pinned cylinder) organs. The larger fairground organs came after 1900.

This instrument was originally a 46-Key barrel organ, but underwent a sympathetic conversion to a 50 Key book playing scale sometime before 1970. As a result it now has a large repertoire of music, and the book it plays here is a newer arrangement by Kevin Meayers especially for this organ, of a a tune called 'In the Arena (Galop Characteristic) by Gerhard Groitzsch.

For the benefit of those interested in details, the organ has a Piano and Forte register, 4 Melody ranks, 3 Accompaniment ranks, 4 Trombone bass and a Trumpet rank on its own set of keys; the Melody consists of 8' and 4' Stopped Piccolo, 4' Open Principal and 2' Harmonic Flute.
