  • All of you close-minded "no emotion" and "no expression" or "it's not musical" folks :

If a human being picks up his or her instrument and begins to play, whether it is an atonal tapping piece, a 32nd-note chromatic run, or a gorgeous, gliding guitar solo, it is EXPRESSION. By definition, you are expressing *something* by registering musical frequencies via hitting notes which indicates musicality. I can't stand when people say players like Abasi or Vai or Petrucci "lack expression or soul".

  • Perfectly said Mr Vai.

  • @GabrielePala i used to thing exactly the same, try a litllebit of shawn lane, change my perspective!

  • Vai studied music learnt it all but missed one important class - 'How To Play A Tune i.e. Melodically & Write Great Songs'.

  • @rogue1988 lols too true

  • John Sykes shreds.

  • jason becker is shred he was the master in my opinion

  • @Piaseczno1 all playing steers emotion certainly "Comfortably Numb" evokes a particular and more common emotional response .but the emotion yngwie malmsteen, for example ,elicits has no less value or merit than any other even if less people understand and react positively to that sort of playing .

  • So, is shredding analogous to a competitive sport, whereas as a warm and moving guitar solo like in "Comfortably Numb" is supposed to be viewed as stirring emotion? Maybe. I think I understand what people mean by "technical guitarist" vs. whatever you'd call a guitarist who plays for the purpose of registering an emotion. Hmm. Thanks, but do tell me if that's not right.

  • Hes descibing a guitar virtuoso, a shredder just goes wedele-wedele-weeeeeeee!!! :)
