An engine failure on takeoff is no joke. Luck he had a golf course ahead and not a house.

@Iris421989 and as long as there isn't any other aircraft with similar call sings that could create the potential for confusion.

Wow luck and good piloting!
-
What caused the engine failure?
-
@Iris421989 Generally the best practice is to use your full tail number until ATC chooses to abbreviate it. Then you can reply with that abbreviated number with that controller. As soon as they hand you off to another controller, use full tail number again, let the new controller abbreviate it, etc.

"We're on the fairway" Answer question FAIL!

Very good job by the pilot and ATC operators!

@Jacobdead I randomly found this clip and I used to live by there and my father got his pilots license and atc certification there...very random

@Jamesfromnyc An engine failure at any time is no joke. However, just after takeoff is quite a bit more dangerous.

@Iris421989 After you (assuming you're the plane) first call the tower with your FULL callsign (without the 'N', The N just denotes the location of registration of the airplane), the tower MAY call you back with the last 3 characters of your callsign. After that, you may also contact ATC with the last 3 letters. In practice, you should only start saying the last 3 characters AFTER the ATC has started calling you by your last 3 characters. If ATC continues to use your full callsign, do the same
Can anyone tell me what the ATC protocol is for talking to ATC with a tail number like N2753D?
Can you say 53ND?
Or is it N53D
or just 53D

@Iris421989 ATC can abbreviate your tail number to the last three letters or numbers, so it would be 53D example: "Cessna 53Delta turn left heading 160" The Only time you can abbreviate your tail number is after an air traffic controller does so. Thanks for Watching!

That wouldn't happen to be the Beaver County airport in Pennsylvania? I used to live there and played on that course before.

In the begining the pilot states that he is at "moore". That is the FBO that has the trainers that we use.
