James Choules, who adopts the alter-ego of SHEONE, is a London based artist with a unique brand of abstract painting that is rooted deep in the new wave graffiti era of early eighties New York. However, his trademark strokes and bold expressive approach to image making put him firmly in the present. ReFill Magazine to refer to him as 'a leading cultural artist'.The paintings are a constant rerendering of now. Hip, data injected splats and oversprays, accurate spills and bloodloss ornamentation reveal a deliberate and complex layered story. Works relay an emotional argot, mapped out in highly personal and stylised shorthand, derived from years of acute mark making and referencing of letterforms.Around 1990, tired of the transient nature of works made on the street, he began to explore making permanent paintings on canvas and found metal objects Beyond canvas, SHEONE has built a reputation for making complex installation paintings, being able to contend comfortably with very large and often unruly spaces.
