The word flashlight was around during the postwar period, a torch was something smaller.

I've had a phobia of trees blowing in the wind since I was 6 because of this episode. Still pretty creepy at age 30! Kids these days are missing out ;-)

kg142..the same thing occurred to me when watching this. FLASHLIGHT!?? I went back to the book but it has flashlight in that too. I may have a US version so the copy may have been changed for translation. I live in the states now and nobody here would know what a torch is (except the olympic one!). If any one reads this please try and visit the manor house in Hemingford Grey. Its beautiful and the gardens are amazing. Its not Blenheim but its has more charm. I hope Diana is still enjoying it too

Fantastic to see this on here, I remember it well although in 1986 I was 21 but it was the thing that the BBC did and still does best. One thing annoys me-I cannot believe the word flashlight was used, surely it should be TORCH!? Anyway thanks to the poster for this.
