I just received the new mid 2010 27" i7 2.93 GHz Quad-Core iMac - And to my great disappointment, the PSU is defective and is emitting a quite frustrating static noise when the screen is sleeping or dimmed.
I have seen this on iMacs back in March and April, and thought that Apple had fixed this problem... But unfortunately it is not so...
so did they replaced your imac..

@ROTTENBURGAZ Every Company has DOA (Dead on Arrival) Machines. When you get one you take it back and they give you a brand new one.

@aliensporebomb Your's one doesn't have that problem, watch out for yellow tint and if the display just suddenly stops working. That was the first problems most people got when they bought the iMac just as it had been released.

Well i'm not sure actually, I heard that if you get problems, just return it and they'll exchange the PSU part for you. I however rethought about what I needed in a computer and I actually need more monitors for my work, so I went ahead with a Mac Pro instead.

@Dews1111 No thanks, could as well happen there right? It's basically all the same. Just that they failed with the display PSU.

@YehChinKwan omg. i have olready ordered the middle 2010 (july) apple imac i7 2.93ghz quad core and i will have got it by the next week. do i need to be afraid?? or not... do they have fixed this problem.... a friend of mine who bought this imac 2 days ago told me that the have fixed it. this problem occured only on imacs of july and august. the new ones (september, october) have no problem. is my friend right??

Yeah this is pretty horrible, I'm on my second iMac that just came in today. And yes.... it's ALSO buzzing when I reduce the volume. Maybe go Mac Pro instead?

My first one had this too. The replacement only started to buzz slightly at 30% or less (I never had it this dark in normal conditions).
I sent my second iMac back to Apple too, because both of them had very nerve-wracking vibrations and hummed due to a loud 2TB HDD.
