Demonstrators occupy the vacant bank building in Santa Cruz located at 75 River Street, and outside of the front entrance of the bank, officers with the Santa Cruz Police Department make their first retreat when confronted with the mass of people. Owned by Wells Fargo, the bank has been vacant and sitting empty for three years, except for the small group of homeless people who have slept outside of the building on the front lawn since its vacancy. They sleep during the day next to the building as the building continues to run its climate control system and electrical power.
The occupiers had hoped to transform the space into a community center, but Wells Fargo was not interested in that and would not negotiate, and the occupation voluntarily ended three days after it began.
