First all-female Rock band signed by major label!

Fanny wasn't actually the first all-female Rock band signed up by record companies. Women were jamming around the world all through the 60's; the first signed, for a few singles, was Goldie & the Gingerbreads in the mid-60's. and of course there was the Girls, the Ace of Cups, the Luv'd Ones, and She among many more. But they were putting out singles on smaller labels. In 1970, Warner Brothers signed Fanny as the first all-female act to a major label and pushed their LP heavily.

Some folks try to argue that "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls" (1970) was a major catalyst for female rockers. A nice thought, but aggravating considering that the real thing was there from '70 to '75. Fanny broke all the barriers first, and got the brunt of it all first as well. They were all-female, they played as well as any of their peers, the two Millington sisters were Filipina-Americans, and they advocated alternative relationships. In their steps would come Birtha, Isis, Suzi Quatro, the Runaways, and the Punk floodgates. Along the way they made four albums (a fifth has a partial line-up), won over musicians from Little Feat to David Bowie, and made a lot of good music before the toll undid them.

Though history has neglected them, the tide is turning. RCKRGRL champions them and Rhino Records has put all four albums with many extras into a box set, "FIRST TIME IN A LONG TIME", available through their website. If you like the Beatles, Cream, Badfinger, T-Rex, Ike & Tina, and funky blues, you're gonna love Fanny!

  • NEW BIRTHA WEBSITE!!!

An excellent new website has just debuted dedicated to the band, BIRTHA:

    birtharocks(dot)com

Check it out, tell your friends, and show the love!

  • Check out these FANNY videos:

    -FANNY-"BORROWED TIME" (1971)

    -FANNY-"YOUNG AND DUMB" (1971)

    -FANNY-"I'M SATISFIED" (1973)

    Also,

    -BIRTHA -"FREE SPIRIT" (1972)

-THE RUNAWAYS -"QUEENS OF NOISE" (1977)

  • I have mentioned this group many a time ,though most people throw me a blank expression & maybe think my memory is playing tricks on me.

Didn't they do a version of "Ain't That Peculiar" on a 'Reprise' records single in the UK too ?

  • You're right, they covered the song for their "Fanny Hill" album.

  • New FANNY fan forum! See link in "About This Video" to the right...

  • It's great to see Fanny being recognized at last - I bought Charity Ball, Fanny Hill & Mothers Pride on vinyl, and I'm not too sure they were ever released in any other format - certainly not on cd anyway. By the way funknroll, where did you get all the great photos of the band that you use in your videos?

  • They're from the Rhino Records box set, "First Time In a Long Time". It compiles all their albums as the original line-up onto 4 CDs.

Check the Rhino website under their "Handmade" imprint, or look for individual tunes from it on iTunes!

  • Another fantastic track from the Millingtons et al

  • Birtha and Fanny both rock! :-) Check out the sites for more information...

  • This kicks ass!!!

I wonder why this song wasn't a big hit.

The first time I heard Fanny was one song

"I've Had It" when I was a little kid ....my sister had the 45 and played it alot back then ...I'm thinking 1975??

"Borrowed Time" is superior to "I've Had It".
