A trio of what it appeared to be Union Pacific SD70M's approached the east end of Amtrak Roseville station platform for a typical yard to wye to Main 1 move. I decided to record this "house sparrow move" anyway.

I was surprised by the engine in the middle, a BNSF SD70MAC (#8891), rarity in California which is infested with BNSF Dash 9's.

  • when have you ever seen UP hook up with a BNSF locomotive....honest to god thats a first

  • When it rains it pours... after seeing this, I've seen it happen few more times, and some of that captured on video I posted: "Cajon Pass - BNSF & UP at Swarthout Canyon" and "Trains in Stockton, California".

  • Here in Kansas City, I can't say I recall ever seeing a BNSF mixed in with UP. If I have, I don't recall it. In fact, I don't recall ever seeing the old Santa Fe and UP power mixes much at all either.

  • Are these remote controlled? I didn't see an Engineer in the cab.

  • In all the months I spent in Roseville, I never once saw an SD70MAC there. I did manage to catch a couple in Larkspur, CO, though.

  • I have seen BNSF MAC's occasionally pop up on grain drags here in central Kansas

  • How do they decide who pays for the fuel and maintenance costs incurred when a railroad is using another railroad's locomotive? I live close to N&S and WLE lines and Ive seen BNSF, CSX and UP on the NS double track, and various locomotives on the Wheeling and Lake Erie line.

  • by the way, coincidently, i was on the coast starlight that you were pacing , i was mainly in the observation car center of the train. As i have stated as it was part of my itinerary to travel on the starlight from LA to Seattle to see friends there , i had absolutely no idea it was going through the Tehachapi...When i was told it was while at Union Station my jaw almost dropped to the floor...what a coincidence you would happen to have filmed that as well

  • and I took the engine's number and found out that it usually operates on coal trains in Illinois and Kansas!!!!! so it's far away from home rails. It just goes to show you'll never no what you're going to see one day when you're a railfan.

  • Nice catch for you to!!!!!!!
