The film begins in the 1980s Soviet Union. Two best friends, Orlov and Muravyev, are serving at the Black Sea Navy Base in Sevastopol, Crimea. Both fall in love with one beautiful girl Nelly, and their friendship suffers a first blow. Because she picks Muravyev, his friend Orlov struggles with an inferiority complex and becomes a secretive alcoholic.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, both friends are transfered to the Nothern Fleet on the Polar Ocean. One day their sub is performing a routine training. A disturbed WWII mine slowly moves on a collision course with the sub. A mighty blast knocks down everyone inside the wrecked sub, 72 meters below the sea level. Then ensues a nerve-racking struggle for survival.

@roboticmehdi not necesserly. Swimming to the shore 30min, climbing 3-4 hour, 1 hour for explenation what happend, 3 hour to organise help. More than 5 hour left for getting them out.

@roboticmehdi Also the guy slipped the note to the civilian and it got out.Remember one of the guys asked if he could give the civilian a note just in case but one of the higher rank guys said no.I guess if they would've gotten out there would be no point for the young guy to write anything at all.

@231johnjohnson they probably died. when the man was climbing up the got oxygen for 12 hours. by the time he reaches the city and tells anybody about what happenden they would be left with little oxygen and its impossible to save them in such a short time. so, yes, they all died exept the that civilian guy.
