I think DM is definitely their best effort since the black album, as they did a little too much "experimenting" (read: fucking around) with their musical influences in the albums after the black album. However, in Death Magnetic, the band returns to their heavier thrash metal with some sick guitar solos. Not only that, but the new songs in DM fit Hetfield's worn-out voice better (shit happens, but everyone gets old sooner or later).
