And yes, Taps is generally played as the last call of the night on most military installations. I think BluezBro604 wasn't saying it can't be played during the day, just that it's normally played at night to signal "lights out" or something to that effect. Some bases use Tattoo (particularly Army) preceding or in place of. Most of the times I've played Taps for the military took place for Military Honors & was during the day. Taps is something I take very seriously & shouldn't be taken lightly.

This isn't the correct version of Taps. I've performed Taps hundreds of times during my service in the U.S. Air Force & Army. Eighth notes--not dotted eighth sixteenth in the middle section. It's almost as common as the high C civilian trumpet players love to try to play at the end of the National Anthem--not part of the regulation arrangement. I guess some people just have to show off though. The U.S. Army Bands site has a good section for showing the proper ways to perform--under "Music".
